1.Supporting the Crankshaft: The main bearing is responsible for holding the crankshaft in place within the engine block and enabling it to rotate smoothly. It bears the weight of the crankshaft and the forces generated during engine operation, ensuring that the crankshaft remains properly aligned and can rotate with minimal friction.
2.Reducing Friction and Wear: It is typically a plain bearing, consisting of two semicircular pieces of metal that enclose the crankshaft. A groove runs along the center of the bearing, and one or more holes are cut into the groove to allow engine oil to enter. The oil forms a lubriing film between the bearing and the crankshaft, reducing direct metal-to-metal contact, minimizing friction, and reducing wear on both the bearing and the crankshaft.
3.Absorbing Forces: The main bearing absorbs the rotational forces from combustion and other dynamic forces within the engine. By doing so, it helps to dampen vibrations and reduce engine knock and noise during operation, contributing to the smooth and quiet running of the engine.
