1. Controlling Exhaust Gas Discharge
The exhaust valve’s primary role is to regulate the flow of spent exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber. It opens during the exhaust stroke of the engine cycle, when the piston moves upward to expel byproducts of combustion (e.g., carbon dioxide, water vapor, and unburned hydrocarbons). When closed, it seals the combustion chamber to prevent these hot gases from leaking back into the cylinder during the intake, compression, or power strokes. This precise timing ensures efficient removal of exhaust gases, making space for fresh air (or air-fuel mixture) in the next cycle.


2. Sealing the Combustion Chamber Under Extreme Pressure
When closed, the exhaust valve forms a tight seal against its corresponding exhaust valve seat (e.g., part 6127-11-1325). This seal is critical to:

Preventing high-pressure exhaust gases from escaping during the compression and power strokes, which would reduce engine efficiency and power.
Stopping unburned air/fuel mixture from leaking into the exhaust manifold during the intake stroke, which could cause misfires or damage to exhaust system components (e.g., alytic converters in some appliions).
